About the Project

Project Indian Economy

The project focuses on studying the current trends and patterns in the Indian economy from a macroeconomic perspective, with a special emphasis on two crucial themes: development economics and public finance.

Why this focus?

  • Macroeconomic Trends: India, as one of the largest economies in the world, has unique and evolving macroeconomic conditions. This includes understanding national economic indicators like GDP growth, inflation rates, unemployment, and overall economic stability. By studying these trends, we will learn how to analyse the broad forces shaping the economy.
  • Development Economics: This theme is about understanding how India is developing—looking at factors like poverty, income inequality, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and the overall standard of living. Students will explore how policy decisions, economic reforms, and global trends influence India’s economic development and how the country can achieve sustainable growth.
  • Public Finance: Public finance involves understanding the role of government in the economy, especially in managing public resources and expenditures. Students will examine fiscal policies, taxation systems, government spending, and public debt management. This is essential for understanding how government actions affect economic growth, development, and the welfare of citizens.

Together, we analyse:

Following themes in general, together we will target key research questions.

  • Economic Growth in India: Investigate the long-term trends and short-term fluctuations in India’s growth trajectory, including factors driving or hindering growth.
  • Government Policies: Study the impact of fiscal and monetary policies, taxation, subsidies, and government spending on different sectors of the economy.
  • Public Debt and Deficit Management: Analyse how the Indian government manages its debt and deficits and the implications of these for the broader economy and future growth.
  • Inequality and Poverty: Explore how economic growth affects poverty and income inequality in India and the effectiveness of government programs aimed at development and poverty alleviation.
